History of Neamț (county)
Neamț is the spiritual fortress of the north and home to the military stronghold that stopped the Ottoman Sultan. The Neamț Citadel was built in the 14th century on a high rock plateau and in 1476 it successfully withstood the siege of Mehmed the Conqueror who was forced to retreat after failing to breach its thick walls.
