History of West Pomeranian

West Pomeranian is a land of secret islands and white beaches where the river Oder meets the sea. For centuries, Viking raiders and Slavic pirates sailed these waters from their wooden forts on the island of Wolin as early as the 10th century. This sea faring past is the soul of a West Baltic coast road trip through the western gate of the country.

The region was the home of the Gryfici dukes, who ruled from the white Szczecin Castle for over 500 years. They controlled the trade of the Baltic and filled their cities with fine brick buildings and wide squares. You can still see the last wall of a 15th century church sitting on the cliff at Trzęsacz, as the rest was taken by the sea waves.

The woods of the region hold strange secrets like the Crooked Forest, where 400 pine trees were planted around 1930 with a strange uniform hook shape. No one knows for sure why they grow this way, but they stand as a silent mystery in the woods. From the tall 65 meter lighthouse at Świnoujście to the wild bison, this land is a story of wind and waves.
