History of Zeeland
Zeeland, meaning “Sea Land,” is a special province in the southwest of the Netherlands, made up of islands and peninsulas. Its history is shaped by the constant battle with the sea. For centuries, floods have changed the landscape, with some villages lost underwater, especially during the devastating North Sea flood of 1953.
To protect the land, the Dutch built the Delta Works, a remarkable system of dams and barriers. Zeeland’s people have always shown great resilience, reflected in their motto “Luctor et emergo” (“I struggle and emerge”).
The region was a Viking settlement in the 9th century. Over time, small islands were connected by dikes, turning marshes into farmland. Zeeland grew wealthy during the Middle Ages and the Dutch Golden Age through trade and shipping.
