Luxembourg's history

Luxembourg’s story begins in the 10th century, when a small fortress was built on a rocky hill overlooking the Alzette River. Around this stronghold grew a settlement that would slowly become one of Europe’s most enduring states. Its strategic location between France, Germany and Belgium made it both valuable and vulnerable. Over the centuries it changed hands many times.

Despite wars and shifting borders, Luxembourg always found a way to endure. It became a Grand Duchy in the 19th century, gaining independence while keeping close ties with its neighbors. The country developed a strong identity rooted in resilience, neutrality and openness.

Luxembourg stands as one of Europe’s smallest yet a true powerhouse. Its medieval castles, rolling valleys and multilingual culture tell the story of a place that has learned to balance strength with peace.
